Gaming headsets are a scam and you should stop buying them

In today’s world it’s easy to sell a piece of computer hardware for a higher price… just put the label of “gaming” on it and tell people about how much better it is than the normal stuff. In reality this is not always the case specially in terms of “Gaming” headsets.

Let me explain. All the advertisements you see about 7.1 surround headsets, are false. They lie to you to give you the illusion of having a superior product while in truth it is no different or better than any other quality stereo headset that you can buy for the same or lesser amount of money.

Why is this the case? Well, in reality the way you identify a audio’s direction i.e. whether it’s coming from the left or right, forward or backward, is by means of sound delay. What is sound delay you ask? To put in simple words, whether your left year detects the sound first or the right. Whether the vibrations of sound are coming from the back or the front.

Now, when you hear surround sound in a game, for example CS:GO, to detect the position of an enemy… all the work of surround sound is done by the GAME. All the information about the enemy location and footsteps are calculated and send to your headset by the game. The headset then feeds your ear the information. To feed this information to your ears and brains, it only needs a stereo setup. Doesn’t matter how many magnets or techy stuff the headset has, you still have only 2 ears trapped in the headset. So a stereo setup is all you need.

That being said, a quality headset will indeed improve the quality of sound you receive (but won’t give any improvements to surround sound), so it is important to get a quality headset… but by no means a “gaming” headset a quality headset for the price you pay for them.

Few examples of quality headsets you can buy which will give you just as good if not better sound quality than “gaming” headsets in the same or more price range are:

Behringer HPS3000 Studio Headphones

Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Professional Studio Monitor Headphones
(Click to see the product on Amazon)

Audio Technica AUD ATHAD500X Audiophile Open-Air Headphones

These are the 3 headsets of my choice which I decided considering all sorts of budget. If you have no limits on budget and just want the best quality stuff, I will recommend Sennheiser HD 800 Reference Dynamic Headphone which will provide you with sound which just can’t get any better.
